We have looked into every facet of this incredible resort and all that it has to offer…and I am continuously astounded that there’s always so much more just on the other side of the last door we walked through. There is always another room filled with elegance and luxury around every turn in the King and Prince Resort – frankly, it is the pinnacle of resorts and the only vacation destination that is a ‘must-see.’
We delve further into the magic of King and Prince, by sitting down and speaking with the people behind the scenes, as it were, and came to find out yet another truly remarkable point: The main reason why King and Prince Resort keeps growing, expanding, and has become the dream vacation destination, is the fact that it’s a family. Each and every person who works for King and Prince loves their job. This place has not only given everything to their guests, but they have given so much love, entertainment and enjoyment to their staff that they never want to leave either. Of course, they don’t have to.
Her name is Robyn Snell. Robyn is a woman who knows her job and is absolutely fantastic at it. This truly bubbly and vivacious personality can be found working in the King’s Tavern, which is a stunning restaurant where one and all experience the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean as they dine on Southern cuisine that’s beyond your imagination.
Robyn also works in the elegant, Delegal Room, which is considered to be the historic centerpiece of the Resort, featuring eleven original stained glass panoramas depicting scenes from both St. Simons’ rich history and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. When Robyn isn’t serving in the King’s Tavern, she’s here – surrounded by chandeliers, the warmth of the fireplace, and paintings galore. And she has nothing but praise for her ‘family.’
Robyn, tell us about the King and Prince experience.
I’ve been here for almost a year now, and I really like working here. I love the people I work with…the incredible setting, the location…it’s all stunning. I’m here before sunrise every day, and feel blessed to be able to view that unforgettable scene over the Atlantic. It’s an awesome sight to behold, and a great way to start your day.
I’ve been working in the Food & Beverage industry for over thirteen years, so I actually didn’t believe there was anything left to learn. But since I began working here, I’ve learned more about food and beverage than I ever thought possible.
Is this the first time you’ve worked in a resort?
Yes, actually. In my thirteen years I had never worked in a resort setting, but I wanted to. It is truly cool because of the people and the ambience – everything is fantastic. And there is so much work going on behind the scenes in order to make visitors have the experience of a lifetime. Even when we’re busy or flustered we always try our very best to make the days and evenings very ‘guest friendly.’
Our time here, with you as a server and everything else we’ve been a part of, I have to say that this is the best experience we’ve encountered anywhere. The details, the atmosphere, and the Southern hospitality is amazing. How do you do it everyday?
For myself, I treat people the way I want to be treated whenever I go anywhere, especially when I’m acting as the guests’ server. I always try to be as professional as possible, and always make sure that the Southern charm is set at a maximum.
Have you met any particular guests that, perhaps, have blown you away? I assume a variety of guests come here?
The variety of people who come here is amazing, and lasts all year long. It’s been a real pleasure to wait on the pro-golfers who come here. I’ve even been honored to meet the Chinese delegates who have helped our community economically. All the guests are very cool, and I love being a part of that – making them laugh and feel special while they’re staying with us.
We have even had some people here where Secret Service was actually in the building. But the staff members, like myself, are always professional. We don’t jump up and down and act like a tourist. J
One of the things I love is the history of this hotel – being an old naval station during WWII. Did you know that naval ships were actually sunk like German subs right out there in the Atlantic?
I didn’t know that. I do know that the history is absolutely amazing in this area, and guests and visitors have a wonderful time exploring.
So everyone ‘behind the scenes’ is a true team?
There are many different departments at work to make the King and Prince this amazing, but we all come together and believe that our work is necessary and special. I’m a people person, so I don’t have a hard time with all the different guests from various states, countries, etc. I love being part of this team.
Are you always this playful and fun with all the guests?
Thank you for that. Well, you have to make sure you gauge every guest in order to make sure the ‘humor or playfulness’ is at the correct level. J There are times where the, ‘be seen and not heard’ phrase comes into play, and there are times where you should be more interactive. But, you learn. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way…but it’s been a while since I’ve had to face that. (J)
It sounds like the King and Prince is definitely the place you want to be?
Oh, yes. You learn a lot about the food and beverage industry, and it’s a great way to meet new people and make money, in such a glorious location. I love the fact that this is a giant family; some of the staff has even been here almost 22 years. I have major respect for the people who’ve been here that long. They’ve seen the changes that are going on – renovations and revamping of things – but they stick with it, join in, and they’re just great!
What do you do when you’re not working?
I wander around a lot…St. Simons Island is just stunning. I’ve been here over twenty years, since I was a little girl, but it is truly new and vibrant every day. I love to walk to work – I don’t like cars, and you don’t have to always hurry around to get things done.
I intend to stay. I love it and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I’m close to my family, and my schedule is great. At the King and Prince, you’re definitely working for a family-oriented company, so they even work with you when it comes to your schedule, etc., helping staff if they have an emergency or need to be with their families, etc., they always work with you.
And is this like a ‘regular’ family?
LOL. Just like one. Sometimes great, sometimes there’s a fight or two, but we’re like sisters. Everything is always copacetic though, and everyone is very kind. Another thing is the fact that I get cranky after breakfast if I don’t eat, and King and Prince feeds us J. Lunch is provided every day for the employees – and not a lot of places are willing to do that anymore. This is a huge benefit for the staff, and just another way that King and Prince takes care of us – just like a family.
You can’t just walk in off the street and get a job here – they make sure you’re a good ‘fit’ before joining this incredible staff.
Any final thoughts to add? About the staff or the Island?
We love Peach Tea. We drink it every day, and call it Beach Tea. Vinny, our F&B Director, really likes it and we make sure that Beach Tea is our drink of choice. J
As far as life down here and the Island, even though we’re growing, I love the fact that life goes at a slower pace here, unlike the ridiculously ‘frantic’ world out there. Even other beach towns and resorts are not this calm, but here things are very slow-motion and easy-going. Here, you can be yourself, do what you want – whether that’s walking around all day or sleeping all day – it doesn’t matter. This is a truly great destination that’s coming back in full-force. We have hidden secrets everywhere; the history, the Golden Isles, Kayak trips, all the interesting sights and sounds – it’s just amazing.
I have to say that everyone has a different character, and I’ve learned a lot about myself being here. You have to be a grown-up. This is truly a prestigious, professional place to work. You can certainly have ‘fun in the sun,’ but it’s a real thrill to be able to have fun as a grown-up here, too. I wouldn’t change it for the world!
Every one of us somewhere along the way has thought of our ‘dream job.’ But after meeting Robyn and exploring the endless beauty of this incredible family, I would have to say that the King and Prince Resort has moved to the ‘number one most-wanted job’ on my list!
