Remember the Rules of Protection “Under the Sun”

by Amy Lignor

We wait for the sun. In some spots—those locations that are rarely seen for more than a month without a ground covered in a blanket of snow—wait even longer. But now, as we stare at the maps on the weather stations across the country, the bright red Baby…it’s hot outside.colors are covering almost all of the United States. Although there are states like Arizona and New Mexico that can usually be seen with red or orange covering their areas, when a place like Green Bay, Wisconsin, is having major problems with heat and humidity, everyone must remember that battling the sun is something that must be done.

Enjoying summer is a definite “must-do” because you never know when Old Man Winter will blow back in. But when enjoying ninety degree temperatures (with even worse humidity) you need to be on the defense when it comes to protecting the skin from sunburns. Anyone who has suffered from too much exposure to the sun knows how it hurts to basically move in any direction. The burn makes your skin feel like you were placed in an oven and “baked” for far too long. And when the skin starts to peel, patchy blotches are left behind. So what is the worst place to burn that causes the most discomfort? The face.

The first and foremost thing to remember about enjoying this long, hot summer, is to make sure to stop exfoliating the skin; instead, moisturizing must move up a notch to number one on your skin care “must-do” list. But if the deed is already done, there are many post-burn products that you should look into using as soon as possible after receiving a sunburn. Here are just a few:

An Ultra Repair Instant Oatmeal Mask (First Aid Beauty) contains the strongest cure for the sunburn, which are oats. This mask is a combination of colloidal oatmeal and avena sativa oat bran; a combination that helps to soothe the skin on your face, leave it soft, and bring back your natural glow instead of having to don the bright red nose that only Rudolph (Santa’s reindeer) can pull off.

The True Cream Aqua Bomb (belif) is there for perfect hydration. Feeling and looking almost like a gel, it actually makes your skin feel like refreshing cool water has been spritzed on your face. Utilizing this before bedtime has proven to greatly cut down on the peeling from your sunburn.

A combo – hydration and moisturizer – is produced by a company called e.l.f. Major ingredients of aloe, Vitamin E, cucumber, shea butter and more make up the product. Great for use during the sunshiny days, it does not feel oily whatsoever.

Another face mask that can definitely help soothe sunburned skin and rehydrate your pores is the Glossier Moisturizing Moon Mask. Placing the mask in the fridge allows you to stay cool with the mixture of honey, aloe, and hyaluronic acid. This is fantastic for people with sensitive skin. Thick, like a lotion, this mask allows highly sensitive skin to feel hydrated immediately. No fragrance to deal with, just leave it on for twenty minutes, rinse, and immediately feel the incredible difference that the product provides.

If wishing for lip repair, as well as being able to choose from red, pink or a sheer gloss to match your desired outfit, Aquaphor Lip Repair is available on the market. Although lip balms are aplenty, this is one that actually helps heal the lips after they become burned or puffy from the constant sunshine. A conditioner, this lip repair protects and provides absolute relief.

Last, but never least, is the ultimate “must-have” product when it comes to sitting out in the sun: sunscreen. And when it comes to focusing on the face, Neutrogena offers a Clear Face Sunscreen that not only helps block UV rays but can also be used by people who are already dealing with a sunburned/peeling face. Truly aiding those with sensitive skin who’re susceptible to breakouts, this is one sunscreen you should never leave home without.

In other words, if you are that sun lover who craves the bright light to come out and shine once again, make sure never to forget about protecting, hydrating and moisturizing that lovely (and now smiling) face of yours.
