Scientists Butt Heads Over Fire & Ice

Scientists Butt Heads Over Fire & Ice

~ Samantha Lewis

Although many believe that “Ice Age” was just a cute movie series, it now seems that yet another scare has to be put into the American people regarding the Ice Ages we have had, and the fact that the sun will, supposedly, head to bed (sleep) in 2020. What would life be without a new ‘dire announcement’ every few months or so, right? Although this one happens to be butting heads with one that was already issued ages ago that is still quite prevalent in all scientific communities. In other words, confusion has set in.

Ice Age, Bill Gates, Earth's History, Science, global warming, mini-Ice Age

It is the truth that we have been through many scares as far as the end of the world is concerned; the biggest being 1999 changing over to 2000 when people such as Bill Gates said, what are you worried about? The computers simply change over. Was he right? Yup. And, yes, here we are in 2015 and still going.

But in 2020, we get to look forward to another Ice Age (?) that will be added to our current historical resume of five major ice ages that have occurred in the Earth’s history. They are the Huronian, Cryogenian, Andean-Saharan, Karoo Ice Age and the Quaternary glaciation. Yes, apparently all five have been a part of the world we live in and, other than these time periods, the Earth has been completely ice-free, even in highest of latitudes.

Science is getting a bit ‘muddy,’ especially considering that we are constantly being spoken to about global warming and ice melting so badly that even polar bears are dying out because there is not enough ice for their own survival. It was back in the 1970s when the theory that a new Ice Age would start in the year 2020 was first stated. Considering the world of global warming, however, that theory was set aside. But because of this news, it seems that global warming is supposed to take a back seat while fear of a new miniature Ice Age is placed upon us. Can anyone say: “Make up your mind?”

This phenomenon was last seen on this planet between 1646 and 1715, causing the River Thames to freeze over. Recently, at the National Astronomy Meeting, information was given out that focused on the “new solar cycle models” and how scientists are producing accurate predictions of irregularities in two layers of the sun. These two layers will fall out of sync, supposedly around 2020, and cause solar activity to reduce.

It was 1978 when “The Coming Ice Age” movie had Leonard Nimoy offering up a warning back then that matches these predictions now. Goodness knows there are many areas of the East Coast that have seen some truly brutal winters over the past few years. And the record-breaking winters experienced have been mounting up, showing one and all that the planet is actually getting colder. Snow is starting to fall far earlier than people expect and storms are occurring long after winter is supposedly over.

But…which is it? Between a mini-Ice Age and a global warming problem that, according to scientists, continues to worsen every day, it is becoming more confusing to people as to what science knows and does not know. For right now, they seem to be backing up only one—Robert Frost of all people, who stated long ago that: Some say the world will end in fire/Some say in ice

In other words, no matter what the news of the day is, all we still know for sure is that the cause of the Earth’s eventual demise remains a 50/50 shot. Stay tuned: When James Patterson’s book “Zoo” comes to the small screen, stories of animals taking us out will also return.
